MEDITERRANEA. RETHINKING THE POLITICS OF MIGRATION IN HARD TIMES

The dialogue will take as its point of departure a project in which are both involved, i.e. “Mediterranea.” The project to launch a migrant rescue ship began in discussions among a small group of Italian activists in June 2018 as a practice and struggle against the politics of “closed ports” pursued by the Italian government and most notably by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini. Since then “Mediterranea” has successfully established itself as a NGA (Non Governmental Action) and has undertaken seven rescue missions in the Central Mediterranean. Importantly, “Mediterranea” has attempted to build bridges between sea and land and has been an important actor in mobilizations across the country related to the topic of migration and beyond. Michael Hardt and Sandro Mezzadra will discuss the experience of Mediterranea and will use it as a lens to analyze crucial topics surrounding the politics of migration in the current predicament: from the mutations of humanitarianism to the crisis of human rights, from freedom of movement to the autonomy of migration.

Il dialogo prende le mosse da un progetto che vede coinvolti entrambi gli interlocutori: “Mediterranea”. È il lancio di una nave di soccorso per migranti, a partire dalle discussioni nate tra un piccolo gruppo di attivisti italiani nel giugno 2018, come pratica e lotta contro la politica dei “porti chiusi” perseguita dal Governo italiano e in particolare dal Vice Primo Ministro e Ministro dell’Interno Matteo Salvini. Da allora “Mediterranea” si è affermata con successo come NGA (Azione Non Governativa) e ha intrapreso sette missioni di salvataggio nel Mediterraneo centrale. È importante sottolineare che “Mediterranea” ha tentato di costruire ponti tra mare e terra, ed è un attore importante nelle mobilitazioni in tutto il paese sul tema della migrazione e oltre. Michael Hardt e Sandro Mezzadra discuteranno l’esperienza di Mediterranea, punto di partenza per analizzare temi cruciali che riguardano la politica migratoria nell’attuale situazione: dalle mutazioni dell’umanitarismo alla crisi dei diritti umani, dalla libertà di movimento all’autonomia della migrazione.

Michael Hardt teaches in the Literature Program at Duke University. His most recent book, co-authored with Antonio Negri, is Assembly (2017). He serves as editor of  South Atlantic Quarterly.

Sandro Mezzadra teaches political theory at the University of Bologna and is adjunct research fellow at the Institute for Culture and Society of Western Sydney University. With Brett Neilson he is the author of Border as Method, or, the Multiplication of Labor (2013) and The Politics of Operations. Excavating Contemporary Capitalism (2019).

Sandro Mezzadra insegna Teoria politica all’Università di Bologna ed è adjunct research fellow presso l’Institute for Culture and Society della Western Sydney University.
